Nowadays, it seems that many ceremony dates are determined by "availabilty."  Churches are booked years in advance for many dates, and, celebrations are sometimes delayed or hurried because several events are being conducted one after another on the same day. The Marriage Man officiants will work with you to officiate your celebration on the date and time YOU want! While many officiants will only work on Saturdays, and only before 5 p.m., the Marriage Man officiants ares available when you want to have your event! Wednesday at 7 p.m.? No problem! On your birthday? Sunday the 15th at 1:38 p.m.? The Marriage Man officiants will be there! It's your special day--you pick the date and time!

The Beatles sang "All You Need Is Love," and The Marriage Man follows that credo in life. If you have love, you're on the right track to a wonderful life.

Of course, love is different for each and every one of us. The Marriage Man recognizes all love, and believes true love and commitment deserves recognition and commemoration. In the past, this paragraph offered information on our lovely commitment ceremonies. We are now pleased to discard that information and say "It would be our pleasure and privilege to perform your legal civil union ceremony," to ALL couples wishing to take advantage of New Jersey's recently enacted Civil Union laws !!!!!! And, that sentiment goes out especially to all the wonderful couples we have had the privilege to meet and become friends with by performing commitment ceremonies over the years. We'd love to see you again!!!!!! And, please note that we are offering a special discount package of professional service fees for the "Civil Union Now/Future Marriage Ceremony" celebration! Just ask The Marriage Man, Rev. Bryant Heisinger, for details about he and his associate ceremony officiants can make your special day become reality!

License Laws

The Marriage Man will gladly counsel prospective couples on the requirements, including the steps for acquiring a marriage license or civil union license, upon request. However, most couples will find the general information below will give them a head start in answering most questions they have regarding the process. It will even direct you to a  license application form that can be printed and completed by the couple before going to a registrar. If you plan on having The Marriage Man perform your ceremony, he will provide you with the necessary information you will need to complete your license application.

Licenses for weddings/civil unions in New Jersey are obtained by visiting the Registrar of Vital Statistics in the New Jersey town where either party resides. The wedding or civil union ceremony may then be performed in any New Jersey location. If neither party is a New Jersey resident, the license must be applied for and obtained in the town where the ceremony will take place. Be sure to take an adult witness who knows both of you when you go to apply for the license. It takes 72 hours--3 business days, before a license will be issued. Don't wait until "just before" your ceremony to apply for your license----because most registrar offices are closed on weekends, you MUST apply on a Monday or a Tuesday if you want to be able to get your license before THAT weekend. To avoid "last-minute" deadlines, we suggest making an application at least two weeks before the ceremony. You will need proper identification and other personal information when you apply for your license. You will also need to supply the registrar with the details of your ceremony--date, location, time, and contact information for the person performing your ceremony. You can get detailed information on applying for a license, including a printable application you can complete and take to the registrar by clicking here. As of this time the total cost of the license application is $28 in New Jersey. Here is a website with a directory to local Registrars of Vital Statistics in New Jersey. You may want to call the registrar before applying to make certain you will have the necessary documents with you, and that the office will be open when you arrive.

Once you receive the license, it is valid for 30 days. Be sure you do not write on it or sign it until directed to do so by the person performing your ceremony. You must present a valid marriage or civil union license to be married or enter into a civil union--do not lose it or forget to bring it to the ceremony. You will also need two adult witnesses to sign your marriage or civil union certificate after the ceremony. If you will not have two witnesses present, the Marriage Man can arrange to have legal witnesses present for a nominal fee.

The Marriage Man will see that your marriage or civil union license will be officially filed with the proper registrar after the ceremony. You will receive a ceremonial copy of your license following the ceremony. However, you may need a certified copy of your license for numerous legal matters following a marriage or civil union. You may obtain information on obtaining a certified copy of your license from the registrar in the town your ceremony took place (The Marriage Man officiants will always provide you with full details on how to obtain a certified copy of your license!).

The Marriage Man will be pleased to answer any questions you have about obtaining a license, or any other matters pertaining to your  wedding or civil union ceremony. For additional information, click here (technical problems with the New Jersey Statute database have recently occurred. You may need to use the "search" field---type or copy and paste in : Title 37  Marriages and Married Persons ) to find official New Jersey marriage statutes.

Here's Important contact Information for The Marriage Man:

Rev. Bryant Heisinger, Marriage Officiant, Ordained Under the Auspices of the Universal Life Church

E-MAIL:   Bryant@TheMarriageMan.net   IMPORTANT NOTE: E-mail is the quickest, most reliable way to contact the Marriage Man. I prefer to correspond via e-mail as much as possible. However, in recent weeks I have noticed that a few people who e-mail me have "spam guard" settings on their e-mail that does not allow e-mail to be received in their accounts unless the sender is pre-approved. As a result, I occasionally can not successfully return e-mail to some who request info via e-mail. I answer ALL e-mail in less than 12 hours; if you do not get a reply from me in 24 hours, there is a "glitch" somewhere. Please call (609-206-8936) if you do not hear from me in 24 hours. Also, it is helpful for me in answering many questions sent to me if I have important information about the couple such as: 1) current residence (city and state); 2) desired ceremony date; 3) number of guests (if any) expected at ceremony;  4) any other info you feel would be helpful regarding your celebration plans (phone numbers, names of the couple, type of ceremony desired, etc.). If you do not wish to include that information in your e-mail, I will still do my best to answer questions, but most of the time I need that info to adequately address the concerns of the bride and groom.

Phone: 609-206-8936   I reserve 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. M-F evenings to offer no-obligation civil union ceremony consultations. Please leave a message (number and best time to call )if we are unable to answer. I will contact you as soon as possible.

New Jersey Civil Union Frequently Asked Questions/Answers

Because the final version of New Jersey's Civil Union Legislation has just been signed into law at this time by the governor, the information below is based on the statutes approved by the New Jersey Legislature. Although the following is intended for informational purposes only, and may or may not be entirely legally accurate, we believe it provides a basically accurate description of the highlights of the NJ Civil Union legislation.

     1. Is the NJ Civil Union the same as marriage?

The creation of a Civil Union relationship is to provide same-sex couples in New Jersey with the rights and privileges that heterosexual married couples are entitled to IN THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY. It is not a marriage, and couple wishing to enter into a "civil union relationship" will apply for a "Civil Union license," not a marriage license. MOST other states (Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut are presently the only other states that recognize/honor civil unions--New Hampshire and Washington State may soon join that group))  will not recognize the civil union status in same-sex couples, and the rights and privileges available in NJ will, in nearly all cases, not be afforded to couples residing outside of the state of New Jersey.

In addition, the federal government does not recognize the civil union relationship, and there is no federal tax advantages (as are available to married couples) extended to "civil union" partners, regardless of their state of residence (i.e., no federal tax advantages even if you are NJ residents).

     2. Why enter into a civil union?

Although the civil union does not provide true equality with federal and the recognized benefits of "married" couples in states other than New Jersey, the NJ civil union DOES PROVIDE many legal benefits to same-sex couples officially residing in NJ.  The link below gives the official NJ Legislature summary of the bill and mentions the many legal benefits, as well as some of the requirements and procedures for entering into a NJ civil union:         http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2006/Bills/S2500/2407_S1.HTM

     3. Can couples who are not residents of NJ obtain a NJ civil union license and have a civil union ceremony in New Jersey?

Yes! Out of state couples must obtain their civil union license in the town where their civil union ceremony will be performed, and there is a 72-hour waiting period from the time of application until the issuance of a civil union license. HOWEVER, the Civil Union status will most likely not be legally meaningful in most other states. If you are not a resident of NJ, MA, VT or CT, the civil union ceremony will mostly be symbolic. However, the civil union ceremony results in a legally recognized relationship in NJ, and as such demonstrates the love and commitment of couples in a formal manner. If you are interested in obtaining a civil union license for a ceremony in NJ, please contact us for assistance in "interpreting" of all the requirements. We can easily explain the necessary steps to obtain the civil union license. For an overview check out the following link:  http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2006/Bills/S2500/2407_S1.HTM

    4. When will civil unions be legal to be performed in NJ?

Civil Unions are now legally performed in NJ.

   5. What do we need to do to enter into a NJ civil union and have a civil union ceremony in NJ?

A general description of the requirements for a NJ civil union is here.  However, to keep advised of all current developments, contact the Civil Union officiants here at the TheMarriageMan.net   We will be happy to advise and help you obtain your civil union license, as well as explain the custom and personalized civil union ceremonies we can help you plan and celebrate.  And, be certain to look over the information located above on this web page for helpful information.
